Bow Wow Portraits

Animals have always been a theme in Laura Lasker’s artwork. As a high school art student herself, she won a Scholastic Golden Key Award for her etching of a bird. She’s been drawing, sketching, and painting pets ever since. Laura works in acrylic paint and and or pastels, a unique method to capture the personalities of a favorite pooch.

As an artist, I explore mediums of many kinds and relish chances for creative play. I approach the process with a sense of adventure and am in love with the limitless possibilities of layering collage paper, the tactile nature of fiber arts, and the saturated colors of ink. I work in a sunny studio at Whiting Mills in Winsted, Connecticut, where I also teach writing and art classes.

My paintings express life's energy by capturing, on canvas, the immediacy of each subject's fragile time signature. Edges vibrate. Rich hues add depth and strength. Bold brushstrokes drive action and flow – the brisk pulse of flowers, leaves, vegetables, and faces. Line moves, color moves, nothing stands still.

I worked as a studio potter for 20 years, producing functional and sculptural stoneware. I exhibited nationally, coordinated and led craft and mythology tours to Japan and Greece. I also led workshops nationally and founded the Connecticut Clay Artists Association. For the next 20 years, I had been drawing, painting, sculpting and teaching art at New Canaan High School. I was awarded “Teacher of the Year” by the CT Art Education Association and I am a National Board Certified Teacher.
