The next exhibit at the Oliver Wolcott Library features award-winning impressionistic painter Sarah Baskin. Her solo show, Light in All the Right Places: Maine Scenes in Watercolor and Oil, will be on display in the library’s gallery space from November 3 through December 21.
Community members and art lovers are invited to meet the artist at the opening reception on Thursday, November 5, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM.
Capturing the Atmosphere of Penobscot Bay
Baskin’s work focuses on the subtle, shimmering qualities of illumination—how sunlight strikes the side of a coastal building, glints across open water, or casts long, shifting shadows across maritime landscapes. Grounded in the coastal beauty of Maine’s Penobscot Bay, her paintings capture both the tranquility and energy of the shore.
Whether working in fluid watercolor or rich oil, Baskin is an avid en plein air painter who frequently sets up her easel outdoors regardless of the weather. Embracing changing light, moisture, wind, and even snow, her open-air process imparts a spontaneous, expressive, and loose quality to her landscapes and seascapes.
About the Artist
After recovering from breast cancer and navigating the loss of both parents, Baskin made the inspiring decision to leave her legal career behind and dedicate herself fully to visual art.
Her dedication to plein air and studio painting has earned widespread recognition across national and regional competitions:
- Juried Plein Air Festivals: Selected for the Parrsboro International Plein Air Festival in Nova Scotia, the Hudson Valley Plein Air Painting Festival (where she earned the Best of Newburgh award), and the North Carolina Plein Air Art Festival.
- Lyme Art Association: More than 40 of her works have been juried into exhibitions at the historic Lyme Art Association in Old Lyme, CT, where she previously won the Matilda Brown Memorial Award.
- National & Regional Honors: Her paintings have been juried into the New England Watercolor Society’s Regional Exhibition and the North East Watercolor Society’s 48th Annual International Exhibition. Recent accolades include four finalist selections in the PleinAir Salon (including an Honorable Mention in the Vehicle Category) and an Honorable Mention in the BoldBrush Competition.
