The Litchfield Historical Society‘s wonderful Scarecrows in the Meadow display for Halloween season is returning for a sixth year Oct. 18 – Nov. 2.
Each year, families, businesses, and local organizations create scarecrows for display in the Tapping Reeve Meadow, bringing more than 8,000 people to Litchfield in October.
Visit the historical society’s website https://www.litchfieldhistoricalsociety.org/scarecrows/ to learn more and apply to create a scarecrow. But act quickly because there’s a limited number of spots for new scarecrow makers.
(Registrants can request a scarecrow frame from the historical society, use a frame from a previous year, or build a self-supporting scarecrow.)
The Tapping Reeve meadow is open from dawn to dusk every day. The scarecrows are always terrific, and the effect of having them spread out across the meadow is magical (and sometimes a little spooky in a good way).
Shown here is our 2024 scarecrow M-ART-ina, whose creative ability was to repurpose single-use packaging.
